CHECKMATE CHRONICLES 

 
17th February, Saturday The day began well. 34 girls turned for the Kianda chess interhouse tournament held in Terrace. 18 high school girls and 16 primary school girls.
The tournament began at 9:30 am. Each participant played 6 Rounds. 
 
The awards in terms of trophies, medals and cash prizes were to be awarded to the top 5 girls in senior and junior categories.
 
 *SENIOR CATEGORY (Under 18 & Under 16)* 
 
Natasha Kasili in Green House scooped 6/6 points and therefore emerged the top in the Senior category.  She became the Kianda Chess Champion first edition 2024.
She also won a trophy plus cash prize of 1500/-
 
Angela Munene with 5 pts was position 2 and attracted a gold medal and cash prize of 1000/-
 
Juanita Ochieng’ emerged position 3 with 3.5 pts. She attracted a silver medal and cash prize of 500/-
 
At position 4 we had Ann Mungai with 3.5 pts. She won a bronze medal.
 
Melissa Kamau was position 5 with 3.5 pts and won a bronze medal.
 
JUNIOR CATEGORY (Under 14 & Under 12)
 
The Junior School girls and Primary school girls
were very excited to have taken part in the Interhouse Chess Tournament.
 
Victoria Muigai emerged the top with 5/6 pts. She won a trophy plus a cash prize of 1500/-
 
Nicola Moturi emerged position 2 with 4.5 pts where she won a gold medal and cash prize of 1000/-
 
At position 3 was Abigael Chege with 4 pts and won a silver medal and cash prize of 500/-
 
Position 4 was scooped up by Justine Achola with 4 pts and won a bronze medal.
 
At position 5 was Gathoni Kiingati with 3.5 pts and earned bronze medal.
 
 
In the Senior category, GREEN HOUSE was the winning house where as in the Junior Category BLUE HOUSE won.
 
All the players showed sportsmanship and a lot of resilience through out the competition.
 
Julie Mumo in grade 5 led the Karaoke team in entertainment.
 
The participants gained more experience in playing chess. Some participants learnt different ways losing in the game of chess including making two illegal moves, checkmate and time flag fall. 
 
Present was Moses Muema-Chief Arbiter from Chess Kenya,  Christine Njagi-Patron of Junior School chess club and assisted in arbitration and  R. Thuita- the Tournament Director who saw the observance of Chess rules and regulations in the course of the entire tournament.
 
Some participants reported that they learnt new terms including Stalemate and how to avoid such a  situation in the game of chess.
 
Many thanks to the school administration for the support accorded.
 
Also special regards to Mr. Saiti and Mrs. Muturi for financial and moral support.
 
On the same note, on Saturday, 17th February 4 girls represented the school in Chess Tournament sponsored by Microsoft at Brookhouse School. Amani Shiundu, Alexandra Oloo, Audrey Tanui and Erica Muturi. 
 
Audrey and Erica emerged in the top 50 yesterday.
 
 They managed to reach the finals that happened on Sunday, 18th February.
 
Erica emerged the best girl and won a Wild Card to South Africa in June sponsored by Microsoft Team.
 
It was a very good experience for all of them. They got a chance to meet other chess enthusiasts and exchanged ideas also got to develop analytical and interpersonal skills more.
